Bahia                                                                                                                                                         

Bahia grass is widely used in Florida for forage (pastures) and as turfgrass for roadways and medians, as it is an inexpensive, durable grass which can survive without supplemental irrigation or fertilization.

There are some cautions when using bahia, especially for home and commercial turf applications. 

• Bahia has an open growth habit which doesn't form a dense, tight turf.  This can lead to bare or sparse areas that can invite weed instrusion.
• When not mowed regularly, bahia forms large seedheads (the familiar "V"-type seedhead on a long stem).
• In cool and/or dry weather, bahia goes dormant and turns a yellow-brown.  Customers who are unaware of this trait may overwater or fertilize unnecessarily, which can lead to turf problems.
• Bahia has a tough leaf blade which can dull mower blades quickly.  Dull blades will tear leaves, rather than cutting cleanly, leaving damaged areas which can become diseased.

Captiva is a new cultivar of St. Augustinegrass with a more dwarf appearance, a finer leaf blade, and improved resistance to the Southern Chinch bug.  It also grows more slowly than many other varieties, so it needs mowing less often.  Inventories at this time are very limited.
